Foster Farms has recalled an estimated 148,000 pounds of its frozen cooked breaded chicken breast patties with rib meat shipped to Costco distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah, and Washington. The problem was discovered after consumers complained that they found hard, clear pieces of plastic in the product. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled products are packaged in 80-ounce plastic bags that contain 20 chicken patties. The packages are marked with a “best by” date of 08/11/23, establishment number P-33901, and lot code 3*2223** printed on the back edge of the packaging. The number 7527899724 is also printed under the barcode.

Foster Farms says the patties may have been distributed to Costco stores beyond the states listed.

    More on food safety

Foster Farms did not immediately return CR’s request for comment.

“Plastic and rubber are two of the most common items found in a food manufacturing plant, and make up many parts of the machines used in the production process,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety testing at Consumer Reports. “Sometimes these parts will break off and end up in the food, which can cause a danger to consumers who bite into the hard plastic, possibly injuring their mouth or teeth, or who swallow the plastic pieces, which may cause stomach or intestinal injury.”

One concern is that consumers may have the recalled product in their freezer, says Rogers. “Best bet is to not eat any recalled product you find in your refrigerator,” he says.

Costco customers with recalled products can return them to the store for a full refund.

Costco customers with questions can call the company hotline at 800-338-8051.
